Photo of the week: Scottish Rite Temple- end of an era?

Santa Fe landmark

Scottish Rite Temple, photo Steve Collins

Would you miss the Santa Fe landmark, the Scottish Rite Temple if it disappeared? The venerable building may be going up for sale. It’s just too expensive for the local Masonic Lodge to maintain. Is it an eyesore or valuable reminder of an important chapter in Santa Fe’s history? Will a buyer keep it as it is? Is it a tear-down? Is it a future boutique hotel? What do you think?

The temple is such a landmark in SF. That is where you tell people to turn to go to the ski area. It is where you can park to go to the plaza for Spanish Mkt. I have been fortunate to tour the temple years ago and it is so spectacular and full of rich history. I hope it never goes away. It is part of the tapestry of our funky city.

I know- it’s such an easy landmark to spot and definitely helps people get to the ski area and Bishop’s Lodge, Tesuque, Te Thousand Waves and and anything up on Hyde Park road. It is part of our tapestry. I hope it doesn’t unravel!

I can’t imaging that not being there. It’s such a great landmark for orienting yourself. (It certainly wouldn’t be the Santa Fe of my childhood.)

I strongly agree! I use it to give people directions all the time. Where will I tell them to turn-lol?

You shoulde se the inside: a masterpiece of Art Deco design, with backdrops from the late 1800s. The ballroom has Tiffany chandeliers, a huge kitchen, and is perfect for events. The whole building is lovely. The city should buy it. It simply must be preserved!

Maybe they will- or maybe someone will buy it and donate it to the city.
