New Mexico’s has a distinct culinary identity. Sadly, many of these traditions are quickly fading. Fortunately, the state’s Tourism Department has announced the New Mexico Culinary Treasures Trail. Seventy-fiver restaurants are on the list which was compiled in consultation with the New Mexico Restaurant Association. To qualify, the eateries must be at least 40 years old and independently owned. According to Cheryl Alters Jamison, award-winning cookbook author and Culinary Liaison for the New Mexico Tourism Department, to qualify for this designation, these establishments have to be “beloved in their neighborhoods and beyond. Many of these are operated by the founding family, or by someone handpicked by the founders to carry on their legacy.” The website provides a short vignette about each restaurant, including interesting historical tidbits about each. All these treasures are on the New Mexico Culinary Treasure Map.
Earlier this year, the Tourism Department introduced New Mexico’s Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail celebrating the state’s unique version of that truly American food, the burger.
Culinary history lives on!
A few Santa Fe restaurants recently closed. They are: A La Mesa, Café Paris and the Pink Adobe. The latter is supposed to be reopening mid-December, back in the hands of the original owner’s family. Restaurant founder, Rosalea Murphy was a legend in Santa Fe.
