Santa Fe celebrates same-sex marriage

Santa Fe is a great place for a wedding and now, due to a recent court ruling, anyone of legal age can get married here. The Santa Fe County Clerk began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Friday, August 23nd. In the first four days that same-sex marriage licenses were offered, the Santa Fe County Clerk’s office issued 158 as opposed for 18 in the same time period in August 2012. This level will probably not continue as a lot of same-sex couples waiting years for the right to wed and took immediate advantage of the opportunity.

New Mexico has a unique position among states. It is the only one that doesn’t have a law on the books prohibiting same-sex marriage. Last month five other New Mexico Counties began issuing licenses: Bernalillo (which included Albuquerque), Doña Ana, San Miguel, Valencia and Taos.

The City Different has been a wedding destination for years. Now, Santa Fe, where there is a big LBGT scene, can be a wedding destination for same-ses couples, too.

Whether a couple is eloping or carefully planning a wedding with hundreds of in or out of town guests, people love to tie the knot here. One reason: it’s a magical place.

A really popular time for a wedding is sunset with the celebrants framed by the dramatic setting sun. Afternoon garden weddings are also popular as well as ceremonies in historic chapels and unusual venues like museums and art galleries. The area has hundreds of spectacular spots to make your commitment to each other legal.

Parks and gardens:
If an outdoor wedding in a desert garden appeals to you, Santa Fe offers many options from the newly opened Santa Fe Botanic Garden to a unique private garden to one public garden or park in the city or county. There are also private gardens around Santa Fe that rent space for events. If it’s a public garden, check with the correct public agency to get the proper permits etc.

Hotels inns and B & Bs:
Hotels have been doing weddings and special events for years and are good at it, but sometimes you want something more intimate. While it takes a very big wedding to buy out a hotel and insure privacy, it’s much easier at an intimate inn or B & B. There are many around town to choose from. There are even luxurious private homes and estates that are available for events.

My studio/gallery behind Geronimo Restaurant on Canyon Road is a perfect place for a uniquely Santa Fe wedding. Indoors and out there is charm to spare in this historic adobe; an authentic Santa Fe gem!
