Billie took this great shot of the bell tower on the mortuary chapel at San Xavier del Bac on the Tohono O’odham reservation south of Tucson. The mission church, to the east of this bell tower, completed in 1797, is the oldest intact Spanish Colonial building in Arizona. The baroque mission church is reminiscent of Spanish Colonial Churches throughout  the Spanish colonies in the Americas. The religious art on the altar retablo and throughout the church are beautiful examples of Spanish Colonial art. If you go, take the free tour of the church offered by volunteers. The church is rich in the history of Tucson, from the Natives who were there when the Spanish arrived and through the Mexican, Territorial and United States eras of Southern Arizona.

Don’t miss the gift shop where there is a selection of Tohono O’odham baskets. The tribe is known for their basketry. Also, stop and get a piece of fry bread from a vendor.
