Photo of the week: Taos Earthship

Taos earthship

The spire at the Taos Earthship Visitor’s Center, photo/Steve Collins

This minaret-like spire is an architectural detail atop the Visitor’s Center at the Taos Earthship Biotecture site west of the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. You can tour the Visitor’s Center and see some of the earthships from afar. This off the grid community is built with recycled materials like tires, cans and bottles and materials that you can take from the earth around you such as straw and mud. It’s worth the trip. Next time you’re in Taos, blast-off.

Lovely. The earthships are fabulous. They do tours for a decent price - visitors should be sure to take the time. Fascinating stuff.

It’s $7 to get in. If you want a tour of some of the earthships, you have to arrange it a few weeks in advance. Some of them are rented our as vacation rentals and they need some time to arrange a tour.
