Pamper yourself at Sierra Grande Lodge and Spa

Truth or Consequences NM is a town steeped in the past. The historic downtown Bathhouse District area, built over thermal springs, abounds with lodgings offering soaking tubs and pools. After all, people come here to take the waters; it’s what’s made the town a destination for people around the southwest. Accommodations run from funky to more upscale. The historic Sierra Grande Lodge and Spa, melding cowboy chic with updated simplicity, fits in the latter category. The hotel offers simple, comfortable guest rooms (each with their own soaking tub) coupled with a spa offering a diverse menu of holistic body treatments and private mineral baths. It’s the perfect place in T or C to unwind and pamper yourself or be pampered by the attentive staff.

A bit about the Lodge

The iconic Lodge, which has a place on the National Historic Register, is located in the town’s Hot Springs Bathhouse and Commercial Historic District. It’s set on walled grounds at the base of the limestone ridge where the thermal waters originate. Most of front-facing second floor rooms open to a communal balcony. It’s a great spot to sit and sip morning coffee or a late afternoon glass of wine after a soak in one of the Lodge’s luxurious private soaking tubs.

There are three indoor tubs: two hold up to two people and the large one in the Spirit Room holds up to six. There’s also a private outdoor tub where at night you can look up at the stars. Hotel guests get a half-hour soak per day included with their room. You can even soak the day you check out. The waters, containing over 35 minerals, are soothing and odorless. Water temperatures can be as as high as 107° Fahrenheit. Our soaking tubs were always just the right temperature for us and a half hour was the perfect amount of time. We were ready to get out a bit before that. If tubs are available, the Lodge welcomes non-guests to book soaking tubs. If you really want to pamper yourself, book a massage after you soak. Your body will thank you. As an added bonus, all spa treatments come with a private soak.

Sierra Grande History

Sierra Grande Lodge started life as the O’Dell Apartments in 1928. The apartments were really small rooms with kitchenettes designed to accommodate people coming to T or C for the waters. The O’Dell was the first hotel to register a well to pump the thermal waters in to their hotel. Not only did they offer soaking, they offered massages as well. In 1950, the year Hot Springs NM changed its name to Truth or Consequences as part of a publicity stunt originated by the popular Ralph Edward’s radio and TV show, the O’Dell’s was renamed Sierra Grande Lodge.

The Ted Turner connection

In 1991, the hotel was bought by New York City restaurateurs Serge and Guy Raoul, owners Raoul’s, a SoHo eatery. They renovated the hotel and created an upscale oasis in a town that leans more toward quirky. In April 2013, businessman extraordinaire, Ted Turner, bought the Lodge, which is about a half hour drive from his over 300,000 acre Armendaris Ranch. The ranch is planning to offer eco-tours in the future and the Lodge will be able to offer accommodations to people who want to explore his vast property and this entire Sierra County area with its abundance of outdoor activities and rich cultural heritage.

We stayed at the Sierra Grande Lodge on our first trip to T or C in 2007. Our cozy room was comfortable and inviting and the soaking tubs made our visit really special. We knew we wanted to stay at the Lodge for our recent T or C getaway. The hotel was much the same as we remembered it; friendly, accommodating staff, an expanded continental breakfast with house-baked breakfast pastries and those afore mentioned luxurious soaking tubs. We were slated to stay for two nights. Because we were having such a great time in the area we extended our stay for an additional night. We wish we could have stayed longer.

If you’re heading to T or C to take the waters, explore the great outdoors or to take in some art, Sierra Grande Lodge and Spa will welcome you with open arms.

I’ve passed the exit to Truth or Consequences on the highway and wondered about the town. I had not idea there were hot springs there. The lodge sounds wonderful.

If you pass by again, Donna, stop off at least for lunch. There are some great restaurants and then you can take a soak before getting on your way.

We traveled so much throughout the southwest but this is one place we haven’t yet visited. Definitely will add to our must see list and for sure we’ll have to stop in and check out the Sierra Grande.

I’ve traveled to Albuquerque, NM for the International Balloon Fiesta, but never anywhere else in the state. T or C sounds like an interesting place to stay and Sierra Grande Lodge looks very relaxing (to say the least!)

I’ve never heard of this town! What a great name! The resort itself looks marvellous, and a great place to relax and “take the waters”

The town changed it’s name in 1950 when game show host, Ralph Edwards, asked for a town to name themselves after his popular show. Hot Springs NM volunteered. It’s an unusual town and worth a visit- and be sure to take the waters. We love the Sierra Grande. It fits our style.

A lawyer friend and her husband are planning a NM trip this year. I offered her my limited Santa Fe knowledge. Now I’ll have to pass on your Truth or Consequences information, How perfect is that for a lawyer!
