The Mission Church of San Xavier del Bac, just outside Tucson has a rich history. Completed in 1797, the church which sits on the  Tohono O’odham Nation is a National Historic Landmark. While San Xavier (pronounced San Hav-ier), with its Baroque architecture would be at home in many Spanish Colonial cities throughout Mexico, it’s very different from other U.S. churches from that era  If you have time, take one of the docent-led tours, which are free. The schedule for the approximately 30-minute long tour, varies seasonally. We caught the middle of one of the tours and were sorry we didn’t know about them in advance. The guide was very knowledgeable and listening to him enhanced our experience. If you’re interested in history, Spanish Colonial churches or religious art, we highly recommend that you add San Xavier del Bac to your Tucson itinerary.
