Photo of the week: Fort Collins Pianos About Town

Pianos about town, Ft. Collins CO

While walking around the historic Old Town area in Fort Collins, CO, we made a serendipitous discovery (thanks to our friend and guide Helen Peak). There are painted upright pianos scattered around town. They’re part of a fun art installation called, Pianos About Town. If the spirit moves you, sit down and play, that’s one of the reasons they’re here. According to Cheryl Zimlich, a member of the board of the Bohemian Foundation, co-sponsor of the project with the Fort Collin’s Downtown Development Authority, and City of Fort Collins’ Art in Public Places Program, players have included accomplished musicians, people learning from scratch, the homeless and now, me.

Birds, the subject of our Photo of the Week, is by artist Ren Burke of Bird in Hand Studio. While most pianos will be stored during the winter months, there will be some around Old Town for people to see and play throughout the year. In spring, the pianos will bloom with the flowers. All the artists are local. If you want to see art in action, pianos are painted daily at the Art in Action tent in Old Town Square. If you get to Fort Collins this summer, check out Pianos About Town and perhaps give those ivories a tickle.

What do you think of the Fort Collins pianos?

Hi Ren- We loved your piano. What a great color- and those happy, whimsical birds made smile. Thanks for taking the time to participate in this wonderful project. We’ll be back to see what’s new next time we’re in town.
