Santa Fe food finds: Chris’ Cafe

Do you love discovering new out-of-the way eateries? We do! We love sharing our Santa Fe food finds with readers. Here’s our latest.

Chris’ Café, in a Cerrillos Road strip mall, opened last spring but wasn’t on our radar until recently. It’s a funky, hole-in-the wall with about six or seven tables jammed in.  Chef/owner, Chris Valdez, had a bit of a following. He’s worked at one of our breakfast favorites, Tecolote Café, so we thought it was worth a visit.

The small menu proclaims that the chile is hot and they aren’t kidding. I missed that statement and got a surprise.  It’s not Horseman’s Haven hot, but it does pack a punch. Both red and green are delicious. There’s also a specials board. Steve loved that day’s carne adovada pork chop special served with eggs, beans and potatoes. He loved it. I’m back on a limited diet, so I went with poached eggs and potatoes smothered in green chile. The gluten-free chile is made with rice flour.

Servers were friendly and efficient. Steve’s coffee cup wasn’t allowed to go down to empty and they stayed on top of my hot water and lemon. A glitch with my order was fixed promptly and with good grace. These are things that make me want to tell people about a place and make us want to return.

We were there a bit late on a Saturday morning and some people were already ordering lunch. The green chile cheese burgers looked, and according to diners who ordered it, tasted great. Valdez uses local Harris Ranch beef, which guarantees a good product.

We’ll definitely be back. Next trip will be for the burgers!

If you go: Chris’ Café, 3568 Cerrillos Road (505) 424-3566, is open 7 days a week. Weekday hours are from 7am to 2pm. Saturdays and Sundays they open at 8.

Don’t you just love a new food find? Steve’s meal looks delish. Can you order mild green chile instead of the really hot variety?

There really isn’t mild green in these parts. Sometimes, the chile will be milder as all plants differ in heat. Last year’s crop seems to have been VERY hot. Sour cream will cool it a bit, but sour cream is not traditional in NM. When we first got here and I couldn’t take the heat I used to order it on the side sometimes. Now I can usually tolerate it, though it can burn!

I don’t think I’ve had a bad meal in Santa Fe - and I do so love southwestern cooking. Hope this place stays around till I get there.
